ICJ Canada is pleased to announce Senator Kim Pate as recipient of the 2022 Walter S Tarnopolsky Award! Senator Pate has a distinguished career advocating for human rights in the correctional and legal systems and continues to be a powerful voice for vulnerable and marginalized groups in Parliament. Senator Pate will receive the award at a ceremony hosted out of her Parliamentary office and streamed via Zoom on December 10th, 2022. ICJ Canada President Errol Mendes and Correctional Investigator of Canada Dr. Ivan Zinger will provide an introduction, and after receiving the award Senator Pate will speak.

Kim Pate was appointed to the Senate of Canada on November 10, 2016. First and foremost, the mother of Michael and Madison, she is also a nationally renowned advocate who has spent the last 40 years working in and around the legal and penal systems of Canada, with and on behalf of some of the most marginalized, victimized, criminalized and institutionalized — particularly imprisoned youth, men and women.
Walter S. Tarnopolsky was a renowned legal scholar, judge, and human rights advocate who was a pioneer in the development of human rights law and civil liberties in Canada. ICJ Canada is proud to award the prestigious Tarnopolsky prize annually to a resident of Canada who has made an outstanding contribution to human rights, domestically or internationally.
